Dublin Drawing Classes (‘Drawing in Colour’)

Saturdays 11am – 1pm

The Gallery, The Lantern Centre, 15 Synge St, Dublin 8

Dublin Drawing Classes (‘Drawing in Colour’) at Visions School of Art:

Visions School of Art presently holds two-hour Dublin drawing classes (‘Drawing in Colour’) on a weekly basis. The session takes place from 11am-1pm each Saturday at the Gallery, The Lantern Centre, 15 Synge St, Dublin 8. These drawing classes are an amalgam of learning basic drawing skills, and learning about how colour works. This second element can be applied not only to Art, but also to any project where colour is used, eg. Interior Design, Flower-arranging, Fashion Design, Crafts, etc.

“The purest and most thoughtful minds are those which love colour the most.”

-John Ruskin

“Mere colour, unspoiled by meaning [...] can speak to the soul in a thousand different ways.”

- Oscar Wilde

Who are the Dublin Drawing Classes Suitable For?

These drawing classes are suitable for anybody, whether you are a beginner or a more advanced artist: this is because of the instructor’s (Andrew’s) attitude towards education; as with every instructed session at Visions, the teaching is learner-centered, meaning that the tutor will take you from how advanced you are at any moment and expand your abilities and knowledge from there. Therefore, though each class will have a specific lesson set for every attending student, the way that you approach the drawing classes will be from your personal level of experience and skills at the beginning of each lesson, with the aim of advancing your capabilities in every session from that point. Because of this, students of ANY level of proficiency can attend.

You can pre-book 6 consecutive lessons for €90 (that’s €15 per 2-hour class). If you need to miss one of the Dublin drawing classes during the cycle, we will give you back that class for no extra charge during the following cycle, which will then be €75 for 6-weeks.

Dublin Drawing Classes Basic Materials List:

If you can’t find all the materials here listed before your first class, drawing materials will be provided for your first session. I advise trying K & M Evans on Meetinghouse Lane (just off of Mary St Little, Dublin 7) for all supplies, if you are on a budget.

You will need  a box of Faber-Castell Polychromos Colouring Pencils (12-pack). There are also Polychromos soft (chalk) pastels available – do not buy these, needless to say. For the cycle beginning 10th of January 2015, you will also need some A3 (preferably) or A2 sheets of pastel paper. You will need a mid-toned (medium darkness) pastel pad, in various colour temperatures: warm (red, orange or yellow ochre colours), cool (blue, green or purple colours) and neutral (grey); the picture here below shows a good range of Pastel pads (Daler Rowney Murano range) that is perfect for our purposes: I would advise buying the pad in the middle to start off (it is the “Neutral Colours” pad, as opposed to the ‘Cool Colours’ or ‘Warm Colours’ ones, also shown). You will also need a good pencil sharpener, preferably one that retains pencil-shavings in a receptacle attached to the sharpener.

All Cork Visions classes and workshops are held at:

Visions School of Art,

Top Floor,

Granary House,

Rutland Street,

Cork City.

Directions to the Visions School of Art:

Directions: from George’s Quay (where Filter Cafe is) walk (with your back to the Quay Co-op) to where the river takes a corner, across from the front door of Cork College of Commerce. Instead of following the river around the bend, however, continue straight ahead onto South Terrace and take the 2nd street on the right, which is Rutland Street. Continue up the street about half-way, and you will see a large refurbished granary building on your right (there are some signs for Artist-spaces to rent on the front of the building).

If you are coming from Douglas Street, walk up or down Douglas Street until you see the Spar on your right or left. Rutland Street is the street that is perpendicular to Douglas Street, and meets it directly across from the Spar. Turn down Rutland Street, and see Granart House on your left (refurbished granary buildiing with cut-stone facade).

You will see an electricity box on the footpath in front of the building, and just beyond it is a door – this is the entrance. There will be a code stuck on a sheet on the inside of the glass of the door: you can use the keypad to let yourself in and then come to the top of the stairs – Visions is facing the toilets on that floor. If you still can’t find us, despite your best efforts, call us at 087 1499615, and we will guide you in.
Parking: If you drive up Rutland Street away from the Lee, and towards the Spar on Douglas Street, take a left at the Spar. Ahead of you about 20 yards is a small, enclosed carpark (a low wall surrounding it) on the left side of the road. Parking should be available there for free after 6:30pm. The next closest public carpark is on Union Quay (very close – about 1 minutes walk away), and then at the Elysian Building, which is about 8 minutes walk away, max; that said, you may be able to find a place along the side of a street after 6:30pm, as traffic moves out of the city at that stage and parking becomes free.

Adult Art Classes at Visions School of Art

Adult Art Classes at Visions:

The following quote could be said to encapsulate what Visions is all about:

“I had a teacher at the school of art who said something about the only works he really enjoyed seeing, or found much in, were works where he had a sense that a discovery was made in the course of making this object. I like to hold to that as my marching orders”

- Martin Mull

Adult Art Classes, Workshops and Events:

Visions School of Art is singular as a host of adult art classes, because what is studied and taught at Visions is book-ended by (a) a concern for the honing of craft and skill in any drawing and painting media, and (b) an intention to explore the student’s creative process, including what is meant by the Imagination. These concerns mean that students can attend the school to simply learn or improve a skill, participate in a workshop or adult art classes aimed at opening up the student’s individuality and resourcefulness as an artist, or both at once.

Adult art classes include various drawing and painting courses, as well as a Portfolio preparation course (for students intending on entering 3rd Level Art education), Creativity Workshops, Workshops on accessing Imagination, &c. All classes are currently held in the West Court Room at The Lantern Centre on Synge Street in Dublin 8.

Adult Art Classes Tutored by the Founder:

Visions School of Art was founded by Andrew Carroll BA MA Visual Arts Practice (both at IADT Dun Laoghaire). Andrew is also the sole tutor of adult art classes at the school; he himself specialises in Drawing and Painting within his own Visual Art practice. He has exhibited his paintings at numerous exhibitions, including the Royal Hibernian Academy Annual Exhibition, which is selected by members of the RHA from an open submission. Andrew founded Visions School of Art in 2013.

As well as being a professional Visual Artist, Andrew has a deep interest in teaching, and has previously worked for the City of Dublin VEC teaching Painting and Drawing in both adult art classes (adult education) and in rehabilitation programmes; he has also worked as an art teacher at Trinity Arts Workshop (Trinity College), and as an Art workshop facilitator for teenagers for many art schools, institutions and bodies, including The Emerald Cultural Institute, Sky Arts (TV Channel) and The Irish Prisons Service.

Dublin Adult Art Classes : a Learner-Centered Approach

Visions uses a “learner-centered” (also known as ‘differenciated learning’) approach with regards to how our Dublin adult Art classes are taught. This means that in each session, the teacher will take you – as an individual – from your level of capability and skills at the beginning of each class. You will then be helped to progress from that point. This is a realistic and highly effective way of learning, in that that you will not be expected to advance in comparison to the level or ability of other students in the class. Instead you will begin where you are at yourself and proceed from there. This makes the process of learning all the more enjoyable. As well as this, it makes learning from pressures that one might find in another education environments.
